I didn’t like him,” Sophie said, driving back on Dry Creek Road. “He wasn’t being straight with us. You saw the vein in his forehead? That didn’t pop because he was calm and relaxed.”

“He’s emotional about the kid. Obviously he was special to both of them. You jump to conclusions, Sophie.”

“And you’ve known me such a long time.”

“Devane’s pretty stuck on himself. Maybe that hit you wrong.”

“You didn’t pick up any false vibes?”

“I’m not saying that.”

“What are you saying, then?”

“How could either of those people have anything to do with the shooting? From what I could tell, they’re the only people Donny has who care about him.”

“Okay, I’ll give you that. But what about the gun stuff? Did you see the look on her face when I brought it up?”

“Cut her some slack. She was in pain.”

“Yeah. I think she had a headache. She kept rubbing the side of her face.”

Sophie had observed something else. At the mention of the gun, Iva crossed her arms over her chest and tucked her feet, one twisted about the ankle of the other, deep under the wicker chair. “She wanted to disappear.”

Hamp stared at the passing scene a moment. “I’ll try to find a way to talk to her. Away from him. But, Sophie, what difference does it make? Donny’s an opportunist. He saw the gun somewhere in the house and he took it. He’s a kid, a boy. Boys do things like that.”

“Maybe. But I still don’t like Devane and I don’t think he’s telling us everything. He might have gotten careless or the boys always knew where the gun was kept. However it happened, he’s covering his ass now because if it ever comes out—”

“Boys into Men would be finished.”

“When you talk to her, see what you can learn about that scene she described, when Elena told them Donny had to come home. Maybe that’s what he was mad about.”

“That and learning she’d lied to him about his father.”

“And he was ticked off because she ordered him home. He stole the gun and put locks on his bedroom. If he had to be home, he’d at least have some privacy. I think just having the gun made him feel stronger.” It was only a theory but it made more sense than anything else Sophie had come up with to explain Donny’s actions.

Up ahead, a tall, thin boy in a T-shirt and blue jeans with a backpack looped over one shoulder slouched down the middle of Dry Creek Road. Sophie braked and he moved toward the left shoulder to let the 4Runner pass. On the back of his tee was a silkscreened circle. Above it was written Roman’s Gardens and below the circle, Boys into Men.

Sophie rolled down the window.

“Need a ride?”

He ignored her.

“You’re from Roman’s Gardens, right? I see it on the back of your T-shirt.” The 4Runner coasted beside the boy. “We just came from there.”

His eyes looked straight ahead.

“It’s at least three miles into town. Hop in the back.
